Frenemy, webisode among new words in Webster's

Plan to spend your staycation watching vlogs and webisodes? Or perhaps you plan to signal a flash mob for a quick bite of shawarma.

If you're not entirely certain what all that means, turn to the latest edition of theMerriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, which has added about 100 new words that largely reflect changing trends in American society.

John Morse, president and publisher of the Springfield-based dictionary publisher, said many of this year's new words are tied to changes in technology, increasing environmental awareness and aging baby boomers' concerns about their health and have become part of the general lexicon.

"These are not new words in the language, by any means," Morse said. "(But) when words like 'neuroprotective' and 'cardioprotective' show up in the Collegiate, it's because we've made the judgment that these are not just words used by specialists. ... These really are words now likely to show up in The New York Times, in The Wall Street Journal."

There are words such as locavore (one who eats foods grown locally), frenemy (someone who acts like a friend but is really an enemy), waterboarding (an interrogation technique use to induce the sensation of drowning), vlogs (a blog that contains video material) and webisode (a TV show that can be viewed at a website).

There's also flash mob (a group of people summoned electronically to a designated spot at a specified time to perform an indicated action before dispersing) and green-collar (involving actions for protecting the natural environment).

Some words that just now made the cut have been around for generations. The term "sock puppet" — a false online identity used for deceptive purposes — was tracked to 1959 but has taken on new popular use with people using fake IDs on social networking sites.

Many words have cross-cultural roots, including shawarma (a sandwich especially of sliced lamb or chicken, vegetables, and often tahini wrapped in pita bread) and reggaeton (music that combines rap and Caribbean rhythms).

Once words like these become so common that they regularly pop up in conversations and published articles, Morse said they pass muster for being included in the dictionary.

Some words, such as "staycation," have become so popular the dictionary could not ignore them, Morse said. Staycation refers to staying home for vacation and has gained popularity as the economy worsens.

But Morse said some words face years in limbo as wordsmiths wait to see if they are just fads.

Dave Wilton, author of Word Myths: Debunking Linguistic Urban Legends, said it's difficult to draw conclusions about trends in society with just a handful of new words.

"It's also an editorial decision and reflects what the (dictionary) editors deemed important that year," Wilton said. "Most of these words have been around for a while but for some reason they grabbed the attention of editors this time."

Researchers often keep track of words over many years. One to watch: prepone.

The word is commonly used in India among English-speaking Indians and refers to the act of arranging for an event to take place earlier than originally planned — the opposite of postpone.

"Prepone didn't make it this time," Morse said. "But we know about it."

· Last year, the lexicographers at dictionary maker Merriam-Webster proclaimed w00t its Word of the Year. For 2008, they've added fanboy, webinar, netroots, and pretexting to the lexicon. Who cares? I do, because I find Merriam's online dictionary, more consistent, more focused, and better written than its wikified open dictionary or the Google results for define:pretexting. There'll be 100 or so new words in the Merriam-Webster's 2008 edition, due September 1. Meanwhile, I called the company and got the 25 most populist of the new entries as a teaser:

No, it’s not a strange language. All of the above terms have been deemed widespread enough to be included in the recent annual update of the online Macquarie Dictionary.

Maybe some of the words below will make it into your stories this year?

The dictionary’s website also invited people to vote for Word of the Year, the word that is ‘the most valuable contribution to the English language in 2008′. The results? The word-selection committee at Macquarie Dictionary chose toxic debt as word of the year and listed as honourable mentions the following words: bromance, textaholic, querilla gardener, lawfare, flashpacker. The People’s Choice Award for word of the year: flashpacker.

Wii shoulder (WEE shohlduh) painful inflammation of shoulder caused by excessive playing of virtual computer games involving movement. [Wii (trademark of a console designed for such games) + shoulder]

nomophobia ( nohmuh’FOHbeeuh) state of anxiety brought on by not having mobile phone contact, as from a low battery, no network coverage, etc. [no mo(bile) phobia; coined in a study into mobile phone and internet users commissioned by the UK Post and released in 2008]

Who hasn’t seen this? It’s like watching someone withdrawing from drugs–same sweats, irritability, etc.


twitterverse Colloquial (humorous) the world of microbloggers. [Twitter, an internet social networking service + (uni)verse]

sugging Commerce attempting to sell under the guise of conducting market research, often with incentives attached to lead the potential customer to a purchase. [s(elling) u(nder the) g(uise of market research)]

shwopping On the internet, the exchange of items of clothing and accessories for a similar item offered by someone else on a website designed to facilitate such an exchange. [blend of shopping and swapping]

internet roaming facility which allows users to access their email and internet services outside their own country.

lifestreaming online recording of one’s daily life, delivered via a webcam or aggregated from personal blogs, microblogs, etc.

textaholic Colloquial someone who sends an excessive number of text messages.

Great term to capture this aspect of social life. How irritating when you lunch with someone who spends the time reading and texting instead of listening to you!


celeblog a blog written by a celebrity.

click-and-mortar of or relating to a company which has operations online and offline, e.g., a commercial website and a physical store.

extreme programming style of programming required for agile development. Abbrev– XP

linkbait verb (t) 1.to create points of interest in (a website) so that other sites will link to it and increase traffic on the site, as by running competitions, featuring high-profile contributors, etc. –noun 2. such an attractive feature of a site. [(web) link + bait ]

Great to get a term for this phenomenon.



lolcat a photograph of an animal, usually a cat, posed or digitally edited and humorously captioned using elements of baby talk, SMS coding, etc., in the text. [LOL + cat]

personal medical alarm electronic device worn around the neck or wrist, or on one’s clothing, which can be activated in a medical emergency to summon help.

FASHION
ear gauging ear piercing procedure that involves stretching the pierced hole with a series of objects, each one larger than the previous one. [from the different gauges of the plugs inserted to widen the piercing]

Another great word, given that it goes beyond the definition of ear piercing. At my local hardware store, one of the employees was ‘gauging’ by using the different sized nozzles off various glues, caulking, etc. found around the place. Creative but unusual to look at when talking to him about plywood and snail bait.


lace eyelashes decorative false eyelashes which comprise fan-shaped overlapping strips of lace-like material extending beyond the eyelashes.

mouth grills cosmetic dental device worn over the teeth, usually made from a precious metal or ornamented as jewellery. Also, mouth grillz. [originating in US hip-hop culture]

pimp cup a goblet-shaped glass, usually brightly coloured and highly decorated, often with the owner’s name picked out in rhinestones. Also, crunk cup. [pimp (from the flashy style) + cup]

scene kid Colloquial person who adopts an unconventional style of dress, such as coloured hair worn high on the head, dramatic eyeliner and straight jeans, and who prefers hip-hop, screamo, punk rock, and other offbeat genres of music.

machinima ( MUH sheenuhmah or muh SHIN uhmah) creation of 3D animation films for use within a computer game environment, using the existing visuals of the game for characters, backgrounds, etc. [blend of machine and cinema]


mockbuster low-budget movie which is modelled on a blockbuster and usually seeks to trade on its fame or to be a send-up of it.


webcom sitcom available online which allows the viewers to take an interactive role in shaping the storyline, creating characters, making up dialogue, etc. [web + (sit)com]


car crash TV Colloquial TV program that is simultaneously absorbing and repulsive for the viewer.


verbatim theatre genre of plays which uses the exact words of people interviewed, as after a particular event, as the text for the actors.


chess boxing, chessboxing sport which alternates a round of boxing with a round of chess.

chicken-wing tackle Rugby League illegal tackle in which the arm of the person tackled is pushed up behind his back.

adventure running sport of running over a long-distance course through natural terrain, which sometimes presents hazards such as rocks, snow, high altitude, etc., using orienteering skills to select the best path to follow.


roller trainer trainer (def. 5) with a rollerblade wheel housed in the heel, which pops out when the toe is pressed down.


tunneling Australian Rules tactic used by a player to unbalance an opponent going for a mark by knocking their legs sideways while they are in the air.

guerilla/guerrilla dining dining at a restaurant that has been set up temporarily in an unused space such as a car park, beach, rooftop or a private home, etc., customers being alerted by word of mouth to the location.

I experienced this before there was a word for it. Friends did the restaurant thing on Sundays, calling the event Never On a Sunday. They eventually stopped when they discovered that if caught, they’d be up for a $20,000 fine.


connoisseur tourism tourism based on need to ignore conventional travel destinations in favour of more remote or unusual destinations.

Again, great to have a term to pin this phenomenon. Maybe need a spin-off term–one-upmanship con. tourism–to describe people who use their experience to put down everyone else in the conversation? Like the guy at a party who said, ‘You mean you’ve never swum with dolphins?’


flashpacker Colloquial backpacker who travels in relative luxury. [flash(y) + (back)packer]

film tourism tourism occasioned by the wish to visit a well-known location used in a film or television production; set jetting.

Don’t go to New Zealand. I’m sure some tourists there really do expect to see Frodo and friends wander out on the road.


wellness tourism tourism emphasising the achievement of a state of wellness, as by physically healthy activities such as walking combined with mind therapies such as spa treatments, good nutrition, etc.

We should all be toadbusters, given that the cane toads are taking over the Top End of Australia and poisoning the native animals.

climate porn predictions, thought to be exaggeratedly alarmist, about the progress of global warming and its effects on the world.

pod person 1. Science Fiction an alien being with the body of a human being, indistinguishable from a real person but working to destroy the human race. 2. Colloquial someone who unquestioningly accepts authority, taking all ideas, dogmas, policies, etc., without question.

climate wars international conflict caused by the effects of climate change, such as reduced resources, population shifts, failing economies, etc., theorised as likely to occur in the future if measures are not taken to control global warming.

"Search moptimization": Yes, that's "mop," as in to clean up. This is the increasingly common, if not essential, brand practice of attempting to clean up negative search results against general or specific brand-related queries. For many brands, particularly in the consumer electronics category, hostile CGM (define) is beginning to fill, even dominate, the organic search shelf, a zone that we all know has an unmistakable impact on the awareness and trial of new products. For many brands, the mopping process can take two to three years (often longer) and heavily depends on operational and product, rather than marketing, decisions. Dell, for example, still has lots of "search moptimization" to clean up Jeff Jarvis's two-year-old mess, though it's worth noting its customer service blog and IdeaStorm initiatives have already helped mop up or reroute some of the venom.


"Wombagging": This exercise tries to protect, or sandbag, your brand from negative or undesirable word of mouth (WOM). This could include anything everything from buying negative keywords on search engines to putting videos on your Web site featuring your CEO begging for patience and forgiveness. For some companies, wombagging might even include employing staffers in defense of bad buzz. But again, all this falls into the defensive branding arena, not outright promotion.


"Friendiligence": This will become very popular in 2008. It involves the extra layer of due diligence on friend requests on Facebook, MySpace, and all the me-too social networks popping up here and there. Friendiligence will also dial up as marketers oversaturate the social networking space with fan sites and more. Is this a real friend offer, or is it spam? Trust me, we'll all ask harder questions, and some friend lists will start to shrink.


"Converstations": Brands now have multiple entry points for meaningful dialogues or conversations with consumers. These are essentially converstations. Brands fully immersed in CGM or social media may have dozens of conversations, from the consumer affairs interfaces and toll-free numbers to the corporate blog. They all matter, and every brand manager should know his or her converstations.


"Social mediation": This is the process of rethinking or renegotiating certain advertising, marketing, and communications practices as a result of user backlash. What took place with the Facebook privacy backlash was essentially social mediation, and Facebook's own groups served as the third-party arbitrator between disgruntled users and Facebook (the company and policymaker).


"We-bargaining": A close cousin of social mediation, this is a bit more centered on brands and companies seeking peace, appeasement, or a lesser sentence with consumers when they screw up (particularly with viral, WOM, or CGM campaigns). It's a tough exercise, because it typically pits a brand against the wisdom of the crowds. Richard Edelman did a very good job of we-bargaining after the controversial Wal-Mart blog incident last year. He was open, forthright, contrite, and resolved to fix the issue.. So, too, was the CEO of JetBlue when he posted his apology to YouTube.


"Greenlashing": Woe to the marketer who over-claims or over-promises benefits on the green front. The market's just too transparent. Sites like TreeHugger, now owned by Discovery, are part of mainstream consciousness these days, and smaller green skeptics will vet out a green imposter faster than you can say "carbon neutral." As the number of do-good green blogs increases, you can expect even more greenlashing about brand missteps in this area. Mya Frazier of Ad Age deserves credit for firing the first big warning shot against marketers' bows on what she calls "greenwashing."


"Shamsparency": Don't get busted buying shills or engaging in unsavory activity. Just don't do it, or the forces of shamsparency will catch up with you. It happens all the time, and firms in the CGM monitoring space (like my own) make it easier to uncover the imposters. My recommendation: avoid this term at all costs, and write the WOMMA ethics code on the whiteboard 30 times.


"Credlining": Credlining is when consumers sift the good from the bad, the credible from the discreditable, and publish a scorecard accordingly. When protesters of Facebook's Beacon feed effort started posting lists of Facebook's advertising partners, credlining was in play.


"Facelifting": This is the process of taking a hard look at traditional conversational touch points ("contact us" pages, feedback forms, surveys), and slapping on a friendlier, more empowering face that the usual run-at-all-cost one. Brands must think harder about the sincerity and believability of the invitation. How do you make consumers feel important and valued?


"Blog groveling": This is the already-getting-old process of sucking up to bloggers and key influencers to try, test, or sample your new product or service. Usually it involves hokey headlines, repetitive phrases, and an unmistakable hint of desperation.


"World War 2.0": Face it, the battle lines are calcifying around Web 2.0. Ambiguity reins supreme on "Who owns the conversation?" and "Who owns the influencer?" Sure, we all talk a mean game of cross-functional harmony, but war's already erupting between the brand and IT departments, the PR agency and the digital agency, and, most important, consumer affairs and everyone else. Did I forget to mention legal? Top executives, meanwhile, fancy pitting one against the other in the impatient name of just getting it done. Expect to hear much more about World War 2.0 in 2008.
